Overview

System Architecture & Purpose

HappyBakes is a production web application handling online ordering, inventory tracking, and fulfillment workflows for an artisanal bakery. It coordinates daily baking capacity, manages morning rush orders, and synchronizes kitchen batch preparation with scheduled customer pickup slots.
The Challenge

Problem Statement

Artisanal bakeries operate with perishable daily stock and constrained oven capacity. Generic e-commerce software allowed overselling during morning rush hours, failed to group orders into efficient kitchen bake batches, and lacked real-time stock reservations.
Engineering Resolution

Solution Design

Engineered an order processing pipeline utilizing PostgreSQL row-level locks for atomic inventory reservations. Integrated Celery asynchronous workers backed by RabbitMQ to process payment notifications, generate printable delivery manifests, and group items into kitchen production batches.

Atomic Inventory Locking with PostgreSQL

Eliminating cart reservation race conditions

When dozens of customers attempt to purchase the same freshly baked sourdough batch simultaneously, traditional optimistic checks result in negative stock. HappyBakes implements PostgreSQL row-level locks (`SELECT ... FOR UPDATE`) inside atomic database transactions, guaranteeing that inventory reservations are mathematically thread-safe and expiration timers automatically release unclaimed stock.

Kitchen Production Batch Dispatching

Synchronizing oven capacity with customer pickup windows

Unlike standard retail items, artisanal breads require precise multi-hour fermentation and bake scheduling. The kitchen dispatch system groups discrete customer orders into consolidated bake batches based on oven deck temperature and target pickup time, minimizing kitchen idle time and ensuring items are fresh from the oven upon pickup.
